Why are we to believe he has any respect for the Military? Because he served his country? He served his country in 1972 by saying,
"I am convinced a volunteer army would be an army of the poor and the black and the brown," Kerry wrote. "We must not repeat the travesty of the inequities present during Vietnam. I also fear having a professional army that views the perpetuation of war crimes as simply 'doing its job.'*
Implying that a volunteer army of the poor, the black, and the brown perpetrate 'inequities' and war crimes.
Contrast with what he said this very week and it's safe to say he hasn't changed at all in 34 years. ESPECIALLY in light of his voting record.
Kerry is a poor excuse for an American and the Democratic party, despite their continued support of this ugly American, wants nothing more than to wipe this fleck of spittle from its chin and hope no one noticed, or remembers, come Election Day.
As to Kerry's apology... He's sorry we're not bright enough to catch the nuance of his joke-at-Bush's-expense. He didn't apologize to the troops at all. He made excuses.
Typical Democrat.

Kerry is a disgrace, and the fact that the Democrats voted for him in overwhelming numbers in 2004 is further evidence that they have no interest in what is best for this Country, they are only obsessed with regaining their power at all costs.
If Democrats ever want to be taken seriously again, they are going to HAVE to start to TELL THE TRUTH about their plans and their motivations, and let the voters decide based on facts.
They cannot continue to attempt to focus on electability instead of ideaology.
If they had run ANYONE besides Kerry in 2004, they probably would have won the White House.
But they tried to nominate someone who they believed could pretend to be all things to all people, and they lost.
In '06, they are waging a campaign of hatred and distortion, and they are going to lose again on Tuesday.
I do not believe that the American People are going to trust them again with Power until they begin to stand FOR something, instead of AGAINST SOMEONE.
John Kerry joking or not said that our military services have a high percentage of minority and lower-income people than the actual make-up of our country. This is in fact true.
If you grow up in a home that can't afford college then a good way for a young man/woman to get advanced training and a college education is to join the military. That's why recruiters focus more heavily on public schools that private schools. Low income families trade the risk their children will go to war with the benefits of the educational opportunities the military provides. If a child from a better off family joins the military you can generalize that it's because of the intangibles - patriotism, desire to protect the homeland, etc.
Maybe that means the progeny of lawyers and doctors should be more lauded when they choose to join the military, rather than the offspring of migrant farm workers or single mothers.

Anyway I think it's too late in the season for Republicans to make this campaign about John Kerry & "The Democrats". (Almost sounds like a band name)
This election is gonna be about whether people like the way the country is heading after complete Republican control for the last 6 years. If you don't like the outcome ya'll have no one to blame but yourselves.

On a different note I want to caution you EL and Tug too about painting Democrats with too broad a brush. George Bush only won with 50.2 percent of the vote. Democrats aren't some splinter party. They are half of the population. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't make them an enemy or less of an American.
"This election is gonna be about whether people like the way the country is heading..."
And on those 15 words we are in complete agreement.
