"What do you call a man who watches the raging inrerno that is his neighbors house, while blithely remarking that his own house is fire-proof?"

--Me

I know that, according to all the rules of political correctness, we are to view those who are different from us with respect and open acceptance, but does that mean we are to allow them to run rough-shod over everything we hold dear? How's this for contrasting cultures...?

"South Koreans living in america have been asked by their ambassador to fast for repentance after the killing spree by their countryman Cho Seung-hui."

--From the UK Telegraph, 'South Koreans told to fast over massacre'

Also from the article:

"South Koreans mourned the victims at Myeongdong Cathedral in central Seoul today, some fighting back tears from the sense of collective guilt. Members of the Roman Catholic congregation casts[sic] their heads low as they sang hymns and prayed for the souls of those killed."

Had the killer been Muslim from a middle eastern country, would that country's citizens react as South Korea has? Or would they be dancing in the streets, burning the American flag and our president in effigy? Would they sense a need to repent for their "collective guilt"? Or would they lament that more American students and faculty weren't killed as well? Would they put on sackcloth and heap ashes upon their heads? Or would they march in the streets chanting "Death to America, Death to the Great Satan!!!"?

Does anyone remember Theo Van Gogh?

I dunno - what did you do when the news of Abu Ghraib, rendition of a Canadian citizen, secret CIA prisons, waterboarding at Guantanamo, and that pleasant little affair in Haditha came out? Don't remember any apologies, but perhaps I wasn't reading that day. Those days.

You're America-hate is shining through, TS.

    America-hate? Hardly.

Bush administration hate-shame-humiliation? Damn straight. Me, too.

BTW EL, that collective guilt thing ia sort of an Asian cultural thing. Of course, Middle Easterners wouldn't exhibit same. Nor Georgians, Arkansans or, sadly, Oklahomans, for the most part.

But, most importantly, what if the hokey-pokey really is what it's all about?

    "Support your troops"

    I do.

    How 'bout you?

Support my troops? I don't have any troops. If I did, I'm sure I'd be all supportive and stuff.

Support your troops? No, why would I? That's seems a little crazy. Plus I have this old time patriotic problem with standing armies. You've heard the phrase?

Liberals like ER do support your, their, or the troops, for all sorts of reasons - solidarity with the working sorts who make up most of the soldiery, for one. Admiration for self-sacrifice. A sense that they have a justifiable mission somewhere that's not gtossly disproportionate to their numbers and cost. Like that.

This act is a reaffirmation that evil walks among us.

Off topic now--Every time i think of Dothan, AL (having lived in Jemison for some time) I think of it as the place in which you have to slow down to avoid getting a ticket on your way to Panama City Beach! It's a beautiful town but those boys are always ready to stop the passersby! We got stopped when we first moved to Al because we made the mistake of still having our Yankee plates on our truck even though we were living in AL! Never made that mistake again, and never got stopped again!

LOL! I know what you mean! However, Dothan has gotten too big and too busy with traffic for Dothan's finest to do anything other than look for genuine traffic violations.

Dothan was little more than a hole in the wall in '87 but now it's where Panama City was in, say, '92? but this 'town', in terms of business growth and things to do, is still a watering hole for people headed to the beach, even though our own tourism numbers are way up. Believe it or not we have attractions too. Not as expansive or as breathtaking as the ocean, but still worth a picture or two.
