We have other work to do on taxes. Unless Congress acts, most of the tax relief we've delivered over the past seven years will be taken away. Some in Washington argue that letting tax relief expire is not a tax increase. Try explaining that to 116 million American taxpayers who would see their taxes rise by an average of $1,800. Others have said they would personally be happy to pay higher taxes. I welcome their enthusiasm. I'm pleased to report that the IRS accepts both checks and money orders. [Laughter and applause]

Most Americans think their taxes are high enough. With all the other pressures on their finances, American families should not have to worry about their federal government taking a bigger bite out of their paychecks. There's only one way to eliminate this uncertainty: Make the tax relief permanent.

There were others, but none reached so high as this. None rang so true.

I didn't see the address, but I read of it this morning and the local paper focussed on the same piece on which you focussed. I especially enjoyed his encouragement for those who complain to feel free to send more, the IRS will happily accept it. I recall Matt Damon pompously proclaim that he didn't need the tax cut (back when Ocean's 11 came out). My first thought was that no one was stopping him from sending more dough to the IRS. In fact, as this relates to a previous post or two, I encourage all libs who feel that way, about taxes or charity, to dig deeper and give more to both. Surely there's enough rich libs to put us heartless conservatives to shame.

Tell you what, here's a new idea: Make our taxes line items and I'll gladly withhold 85% of my war taxes and divert it to social services. We'll let everyone do this and then we can fund the programs with the amount of money that folk want to send their way.

How about it? Reckon our military budget will still be nearly a Trillion bucks?

Good points, Marshall. But of course Matt & Co. want to "give away" your money, not theirs.

I think it's a valid point, Dan. Why, it isn't outrageous to expect those who have spoken against tax cuts to have been volunteering extra dollars every April 15th. Surely, you have been sending along a few extra sheckles to support all the programs you think the feds should be running or sending our money to.

That to me is the larger question: what should the feds be involved in? Defense is at the top of the list of federal responsibility. Social services are local duties. Far too many things subsidized by the feds that oughtn't be.
