"Critics worry atom smashing could lead to Armageddon"

The critics are ignorant. "Armageddon" is a specific place, at a specific time. Atom smashing may lead to something, but I'd have to see 'the six degrees of Kevin Bacon' on it to take this headline seriously.

    Two definitions:

    1. Bible. The scene of a final battle between the forces of good and evil, prophesied to occur at the end of the world.

    2. A decisive or catastrophic conflict.

It seems typical to me. People were worried about "runaway" nuclear chain reactions "igniting the atmosphere" in the early days of nuclear experimentation. People were worried about the impending destruction of the universe when the first particle accelerators were built.

I don't think we're going to see destruction as the result of atom smashing anytime soon. "Critics" appear to have been not taken seriously by Yahoo anyway, the link on the headline goes to an empty page at "Good Morning Yahoo!"

There is a significant chance that the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) could create black holes. Tiny, molecule and smaller black holes that will dissipate almost instantly, but still ... Some excitable people are getting worried.

When did this headline appear? 1945? 1950? We've had the ability to split the atom for decades and the media is just now considering far reaching implications of global thermo-nuclear war? Give me a break.

Armageddon is simply a short cut way of saying "the final epic battle between the forces of good and evil which will take place in a place that the Bible refers to as Armageddon".

By the way, Eric, I am back with another less than inciteful politically based blog entry.
